Q: Why does this year’s Charlotte march have a new name, Women United March, and co-sponsor, National Coalition of 100 Black Women-Queen City Metropolitan Chapter?
A: If there’s one thing we’ve learned locally in the past two years, it’s that we’re stronger when we stand united. On Jan. 26th, women of different races, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identification, and socioeconomic status will come together in First Ward Park to address issues facing women and to demand change under the new name, Women United March. While there are disparities in equality that exist right here in our own community, by standing united we can empower women – all women – to bring about transformative changes to overcome injustices. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women-Queen City Metropolitan Chapter (NCBW-QCMC) is a dynamic group of professional women with on-going programs that transform the lives of Black women and girls in our community. It’s fitting that QCMC co-sponsor this first annual Women United March with Charlotte Women’s March. In addition to QCMC, almost two dozen other diversity partners helped us gain a variety of viewpoints, inputs and lenses in both the planning of and participation in this first-ever Women United March – from representatives of Latina, LGBGTQ+, Muslim-American, Asian, and Indian communities, to name a few. So now you see how our name says it all: Women United March for equality.
Q: Why isn’t Charlotte’s January 26th Women United March being held on January 19th, the same weekend of the national Women’s March (and many others across the country)?
A: Women United March is a local, homegrown, grassroots movement that addresses the needs of our residents as we rally women to unite for equality for all. There’s a long tradition in Charlotte of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a Saturday parade and other festivities throughout his birthday week; the federal holiday is Mon., Jan. 22, 2019. Therefore, we scheduled the Charlotte’s Women United March for the next Saturday, Jan. 26th, as we help to inspire women to join in a world-wide movement of sister marches throughout the year for change against inequality. Incidentally, many of our members will be marching in Charlotte on both weekends, and we encourage you, too, as well!

Q: What’s the event schedule and March route?
A: Event begins at 11:00 a.m. at Uptown’s First Ward Park with a speakers’ forum featuring an outstanding roster of women until 12:30 p.m. We’ll then march – with banners and signs held high – along Uptown sidewalks on Tryon Street to the Square, returning to First Ward Park by 1:30 p.m. Festivities continue with music and vendors until 3 p.m. Our event is to be held, rain or shine.
Q: Why do you need cash donations? How can I donate?
A: While we are grateful for many in-kind donations and volunteer hours, we also need cash to provide an optimal experience for all attendees such as Parks and Recreation Department rental fees, security, stage and sound, and portable facilities. Q: Are you selling T-Shirts?
A: Pre-orders for WUM long sleeve T-Shirts has now ended. A limited number of shirts will be available for purchase at the March.

Will there still be a Voter registration tent?
Three of us plan to come and volunteer for this. We have experience doing this.
What times will the tent be manned?
We were told to just show up and pitch in.
