Thanks to Laura Meier and Kay Etheridge for organizing the Racial Justice Group’s meeting on October 12, 2017, at Warehouse 242. TOUSSAINT ROMAIN, public defender and racial justice activist, spoke to 75 participants about CommonUnity—Time to Work Together- racial justice and how we can work to end racism. What an informative evening.
The best way to affect change is to VOTE. City and School Board elections are Tuesday November 7, 2017. A Voter’s Guide is posted on our website, thanks to Marsha Ford. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!
We were asked why we do not endorse candidates. The executive committee feels that we do not have a system in place to provide a consensus that is reliable. We will continue to investigate how other groups develop their endorsements and determine if that works for us. So not this time. There are two groups that we respect who do endorse candidates that you could consult: the Black Political Caucus (click here) and NC Equality (click here) and you can always consult the party of your choice.

We are investigating the possibility of an anniversary march for January 20 or 21, 2018, that we are calling REMARCHABLE WOMEN! Volunteers to assist with publicity, setup, speakers’ forum and other duties can contact Tina Maguylo here.

Immigration
There are two groups of undocumented youth who want the chance to remain in the United States and to benefit from a good education with the hope of contributing to the economy as they mature. One is DACA and the other group is Unaccompanied Minors. One is seeking asylum from their homeland and a safe place to live. The other wants to remain in the only homeland they have ever known. Thomas Farr- Poster Child for Gerrymandering. President Donald Trump nominated Farr in July to be a federal judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina, which spans 44 counties from Raleigh to the Atlantic Coast. If approved by the US Senate, Farr could be in charge of deciding voting rights cases like the one he lost. Thomas Farr on the Federal bench further risks perpetuation of voter suppression.
